Within 10 minutes, Elliott had turned this child’s attitude around. This child told his teacher he wanted to help kids who had problems when he grew up, “just like Mr. Niblack.”

Elliott came to the school where I teach to watch me and my students.  During the visit, my student with some severe behavioral issues walks in late.  He was already having a rough morning.  Elliott walks up to him and starts some pleasant conversation. At first the student was reluctant to engage with him and instead decided to be antagonistic to other students.  Though Elliott was not his teacher and was just there for the day, he did not give up on him and instead continued to ask him questions and just listen to what was on his mind.  Within 10 minutes, Elliot had turned this child’s attitude around and he had a great rest of the day. Furthermore, a few weeks later, this child told his teacher that he wanted to help kids who had problems in school when he grew up, “just like Mr. Niblack.”  This was not just an isolated incident.  This is how Elliot interacts with every child—with genuine concern, caring and collaborative solutions.  He coaches how to hold high expectations for all children and pairs them with teaching the child how to use intrinsic motivation. If he could do this in 10 minutes with one of my students, imagine what he can do in a week, month or year?
